I like to play with traditional materials until I feel that I've created something fresh and innovative. Starting with a geometric, concrete image, I layer over it until it forms a more organic, unified visual space. The visual imagery details both disintegration and construction of physical space, revealing how seemingly diametrically opposed discourses are entangled in a given painting.
Helen Calacci is a Fremont-based artist who enjoys painting abstracts based on her own photographs taken throughout Seattle. Starting with a geometric, concrete drawing, she layers over it until it forms an organic, unified space. She is currently exploring the interplay of a local phenomenon – construction and demolition – and her painting process.

The visual imagery in my work details both disintegration and construction of physical space. These pieces are interpretations of photographs I took from residential and commercial construction sites around Seattle. My work is informed by architectural transformation; starting with a geometric sketch, I layer over it with a loose wash until it forms a more organic, unified visual space.
