Bright, layered, and full of character, this peaberry lot from Nyeri’s Gura Factory showcases Kenya’s best. Grown on the volcanic slopes of Mt. Kenya and meticulously washed and sun-dried, it’s a lively cup with citrus brightness, caramel sweetness, and a clean, wine-like finish.
At the foot of Mt. Kenya, where the mountain’s cool air and volcanic soils shape the land, the Gura Factory sits along the banks of the Gura River in Nyeri County, a region celebrated for producing some of the most distinctive coffees in the world.
This lot comes from the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society, one of Kenya’s most respected groups of smallholder farmers, representing more than 14,000 members and 19 factories throughout southern Nyeri. The Gura Factory alone has around 500 farmers, each cultivating small family plots averaging just a few acres. Together, they contribute to a collective legacy of precision and pride in every harvest.
Coffee here grows at 1,700–1,890 meters above sea level in mineral-rich volcanic loam, ideal conditions for slow fruit development and complex sweetness. The ripe cherries are hand-picked, fully washed with fresh river water, soaked for up to 16 hours, and then carefully sun-dried on raised beds for two to three weeks. The result is coffee that reflects the meticulous care and deep-rooted craft Kenya is famous for.
Tasting Notes:
Expect bright citrus and tropical fruit up front, think grapefruit, orange, and sweet plum, balanced by caramelized sugar, honey, and a crisp, wine-like finish. The peaberry selection enhances its texture and depth, producing a cup that’s both lively and refined.
Every step of this coffee’s journey, from the volcanic soils of Mt. Kenya to the cooperative’s detailed processing, speaks to Kenya’s unmatched dedication to quality. Gura Peaberry is a stunning example of how tradition, terroir, and technique converge to create something extraordinary.
