Our Packaging: Why We Choose PCR Packaging

Protecting our beans-and our environment-with over 60% Post-Consumer Recycled packaging.

At Lighthouse Roasters, our dedication to craftsmanship doesn't end when the roast is complete. For over 30 years, we’ve poured our hearts into sourcing the finest beans and roasting them to perfection in our vintage cast-iron roaster.

But a truly exceptional cup of coffee also requires mindful stewardship of the planet we all share.

When it came time to choose our packaging, we asked ourselves a tough question: How do we keep our coffee incredibly fresh while minimizing our environmental footprint? After extensive research, we made a deliberate choice. We chose Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) bags over compostable options. Today, our packaging is made with over 60% PCR content, and we want to share exactly why this is the best decision for our coffee, our community, and the earth.

What is PCR, and Why Over 60%?

PCR stands for Post-Consumer Recycled content. These are materials made from plastics (like water bottles and milk jugs) that have already been used by consumers, collected by local recycling programs, and diverted away from landfills.

By partnering with TricorBraun Flex to craft bags featuring over 60% PCR film content, we are actively participating in a circular economy. Instead of relying on virgin petroleum to make entirely new plastic, we are giving existing waste a second, high-value life.

Why PCR is Superior to Compostable Bags for Lighthouse Roasters

While "compostable" sounds wonderful on paper, the real-world science paints a different picture for specialty coffee. Here is why we proudly stand behind our 60%+ PCR bags:

1. Uncompromised Freshness (The Barrier Problem)

Oxygen, moisture, and light are the ultimate enemies of fresh coffee. To protect the delicate notes, aromas, and oils of our roasts, a bag requires a powerful barrier.

  • The Compostable Flaw: Because compostable materials are designed to break down easily, they are naturally more permeable. They allow micro-amounts of oxygen and moisture to seep in, meaning your coffee goes stale much faster.
  • Our PCR Solution: Our PCR bags maintain the exact same industry-leading freshness barriers as traditional packaging. It ensures that the bag of Lighthouse coffee you open at home tastes exactly as vibrant and bold as it did the moment it left our roaster.

2. The Truth About Composting Infrastructure

For a compostable bag to actually decompose, it cannot just be thrown into a backyard compost bin or a standard trash can. It requires a specialized, commercial industrial composting facility.

  • The Reality: The vast majority of communities do not have access to curbside commercial composting for packaging. When a compostable bag ends up in a standard landfill, it is deprived of oxygen and fails to break down properly, often producing harmful methane emissions.
  • The PCR Impact: PCR packaging doesn't rely on the customer to find specialized infrastructure. The environmental benefit of our bags happens before they ever reach your kitchen. By using over 60% recycled material, we have already drastically reduced carbon emissions, saved water, and reduced fossil fuel consumption during the manufacturing process.

3. Secure Valves & Reliable Seals

Freshly roasted coffee naturally releases carbon dioxide, which means our bags need a one-way degassing valve so they don't burst on the shelf.

  • Compostable degassing valves and zippers are prone to high failure rates and weak seals, risking exposure to stale air.
  • Our PCR bags integrate seamlessly with reliable structural features, ensuring your coffee stays perfectly sealed and protected from our roastery to your counter.

Zero Eco-Guilt. Just Great Coffee.

We believe that sustainability shouldn't require our customers to jump through hoops or guess which bin to use.

By choosing Lighthouse Roasters, you are choosing a brand that reduces plastic waste at the source. Your coffee arrives at peak freshness, in a beautifully crafted bag that is doing its part to clean up existing plastic waste from day one.

Thank you for supporting sustainable roasting practices and being a part of the Lighthouse community!
